From May 4 to 10, 2025, the 37th International Geodetic Student
Meeting (IGSM 2025 Rabat) took place in Rabat, Morocco, marking a
historic milestone as the first edition held outside of Europe. The
event brought together over 100 Geomatics Engineering students,
primarily from European countries.
This edition, the 37th, was the first to be held outside Europe, this
time in the Moroccan capital. The organizing team was composed of
Nouhaila Sebiti, as Secretary General, and Mohammed Khouitti, as
Treasurer, in addition to about 10 other young people in charge of the
different matters of the event.
This edition attracted immense interest, receiving over 400
registrations within the first 10 minutes of opening. Ultimately,
participation was limited to 100 students (excluding the local
organizing team) representing 22 different European countries. Most of
the event’s activities were hosted at the Institut Agronomique et
Vétérinaire Hassan II (IAV Hassan II), home to the Bachelor's program in
Geomatics Engineering.
As with every IGSM edition, the program followed a well-established
structure, featuring a mix of scientific, technical, cultural, leisure,
and networking activities, as illustrated in the accompanying image.
IGSM 2025 began with a relaxed arrival day and a warm Welcome Dinner,
giving participants time to settle in and connect over a traditional
Moroccan meal.
The second day featured the official Opening Ceremony with speeches
from the organizing team and IAV Hassan II leadership. FIG Foundation
representative Ángel Collado gave an speach about the Foundation’s work
with young professionals. The day continued with a cultural tour of
Rabat and ended with the International Dinner, where students shared
traditional food and drinks from their home countries.

On day three, students presented their technical papers and posters,
with awards given by an academic jury and the audience. Sports
activities filled the afternoon, followed by a group dinner.
The fourth day was dedicated to a full-day excursion to the stunning
blue city of Chefchaouen.
Workshops led by university professors and industry experts were held
on day five, covering a wide range of Geomatics topics such as
surveying, geodesy, photogrammetry, GIS, and more.
The week concluded in style with a Gala Dinner, where participants
dressed up and celebrated together.
The final day hosted the General Assembly, where students reflected
on the event, discussed improvements, and voted on future IGSM
locations—this year selecting Wrocław, Poland, as the host city for IGSM
2027.
FINAL REMARKS
Angel Collado, represented the FIG Foundation approaching the
importance of youth in the future of our profession. He showed the
vision and mission of the FIG Foundation, the different grants that it
periodically announces and reserves for young people under 35 years of
age. Angel Collado also emphasized the relevance of the FIG Ecosystem
and encouraged them to participate more actively.
As a final point and with the intention of uniting or strengthening
ties between the IGSM and FIG YSN, Angel Collado proposed that by 2028
at the FIG Working Week in Paris, or at the FIG Congress 2030, if
Seville (Spain) is the winner, both youth meetings should be held
jointly to take advantage of synergies and strengthen a network of young
people in Europe.
