Visit to Warsaw Polish for preparations for FIG Congress 2022

15-16 September 2021, Warsaw, Poland

FIG President Rudolf Staiger and Director Louise Friis-Hansen visited Warsaw Poland for the preparations for the FIG Congress 2022. It was a pleasure to travel again and to work on an actual face-to-face meeting, visiting potential venues and to meet with the Local Organising Committee (LOC). It was decided to postpone the Congress to August/September to gain some extra time both for planning purposes and also hoping that the travel situation will gradually improve over time so that we can welcome as many as possible in Poland. The final dates and conference venue will be communicated soonest possible.

It was a pleasure to meet with a very dedicated and hard working LOC, to see potential venues and also to get the opportunity to visit the Surveyor General of Poland Waldemar Izdebski, and the Dean of the Faculty of Geodesy and Cartography of the Warsaw University of Technology, Janusz Walo.

FIG Congress 2022 is planned to take place in either August or September 2022 in the beautiful captial of Poland, Warsaw. It is the aim to bring together as many as possible in Poland. Since the travel situation is still uncertain - and especially one year ahead, hybrid elements will also be added to the Congress.

FIG is looking very much forward to welcoming all in Poland, and to the preparations together with the Polish Local Organisers with Krzysztof Bakuła as Co-Conference Director, Janusz Walo and Ludmiła (Milka) Pietrzak, a long-term FIG representative, Steering Committee member and their dedicated Local Organising Committee.

We have received the following report from Agnieszka Cienciała, PhD, and member of LOC, responsible for communication and promotion of the Congress 2022:

VISIT OF FIG IN POLAND

On September 15-16, 2021, we had the pleasure to host FIG representatives - FIG President Prof. Dr. Rudolf Staiger and Director Louise Friis-Hansen. The purpose of their arrival in Warsaw was to visit the facilities proposed as the venue for the FIG 2022 Congress and to get acquainted with the current state of preparations, as well as the Local Organizing Committee.

An important point of the visit was the meeting with the Chief Surveyor of the Country – Assoc. Prof. Waldemar Izdebski, DSc, PhD and with the Dean of the Faculty of Geodesy and Cartography of the Warsaw University of Technology - Assoc. Prof. Janusz Walo, DSc, PhD joined with sightseeing of the main building of the University.

At the Technical University - meeting with the Dean of the Faculty of Geodesy and Cartography of the Warsaw University of Technology – Assoc. Prof. Januszem Walo, DSc, PhD who is also part of the Organising Committee.

Afterwards, at the seat of the Warsaw University of Technology a meeting of guests with representatives of the Local Organizing Committee took place, during which important organizational issues were discussed. FIG representatives presented principles of the organization of FIG congresses, including diagrams concerning the division of duties and the required deadlines for their implementation. Louise organized a "brainstorm" during which we highlighted factors influencing positive perception of conferences. Subsequently, they were divided into thematic groups and will constitute a hint for the organizers what to avoid and what, in particular, must be ensured to make the FIG 2022 Congress a successful event.

The advantages and disadvantages of the facilities proposed as the venue for the next year's Congress were also analysed (3). Subsequently, we discussed the sub-topics of the Congress. The meeting was full of interesting ideas and undoubtedly motivated the organizers to continue their hard work.
